On June 25th, coinciding with J-Power’s (Electric Power Development Co., Ltd.) annual shareholders’ meeting, a citizen group held a speech action outside the venue to demand the immediate cancellation of the GENESIS Matsushima Project.
Participants, gathered at the call of international environmental NGOs such as 350.org Japan, pointed out that the project, which aims to retrofit and extend the lifespan of an aging coal-fired power plant that has been operating for over 40 years, runs counter to the global trend toward decarbonization. They warned that technologies like ammonia co-firing do not provide a fundamental solution and pose a risk of becoming a stranded asset that threatens the company’s future value. Furthermore, they emphasized that J-Power should leverage its advanced technological capabilities to accelerate its transition toward clean renewable energy projects.
